Scaling & Root Planing
When patients experience mild gum disease, gingivitis, we may be able to renew their oral health with more frequent professional cleanings and improved at home care. However, for those suffering from advanced gum disease, periodontitis, extensive treatment may be necessary. For these patients, we typically start with scaling and root planing. Scaling is the systematic removal of plaque, tartar, and damaged tissue. Root planing is the smoothing of tooth roots to prevent the future buildup of plaque and tartar that could lead to reinfection. We may also recommend topical antibiotics, professional at-home hygiene products, and more frequent cleanings to prevent the spread or worsening of gum disease.
Soft Tissue Laser
Scaling and root planning, gum recontouring, and soft tissue grafting are traditionally completed using a scalpel and stitches. While this method offers reliable results, soft tissue laser dentistry services allow our team to offer a more comfortable alternative. The laser removes a precise amount of tissue, and the high intensity waves cauterize the treatment area simultaneously reducing bleeding and discomfort during treatment. Because there are no stitches, most patients make a complete recovery within 24 hours of soft tissue laser therapy. Due to the reduced healing time, patients are also much less likely to struggle with severe gum disease in the future.
